Rugeley rugby club welcomed St Leonards “Stafford” to Hagley Fields this week in what became a very and physical fort game of rugby.
St Leonards started their game with fight and determination and this continued throughout the game but still they could not break through the Rugeley defence.
In the first 10 minutes Rugeley winger Steven Salter scored his debut try for the home team, followed soon on his heals was another try by centre Scott Read right under the posts bringing the score to 12 -0 to the home side.
This had an adverse affect on the visitors and they quickly started to implode with their number 12 being very vocal to his own team and the officiator.
This culminating in what was to become a very fractious and at some point vocal period of the game and with only 6 minutes left of the first period Rugeley’s hooker Tom Wilson and St Leonards number 12 went head to head with what looked like a very untidy encounter which gave the ref no alternative but to sin bin the two players.
The start of the second period was a little more disciplined and the game seemed to revert back to the gentlemanly game we know as rugby.
From the onset Rugeley dominated the second period with a great run by Jordon wood resulting in a try once again right under the visitors posts. Once again converted bringing the score to 19 - 0 to the home side.
Throughout the second period Rugeley pack were unstoppable and at each scrum were able to manipulate the visitors and pushing their pack at each encounter.
Rugeley as a team played with complete sync and each move made by all players were direct from the training sessions and it showed.
Robbie castle excelled in the line outs and Martin De Ridder looked UN stoppable.
Once again the visiting number 12 started to get frustrated with the game and started to become vocal in his thoughts and this having an affect on his team mates but allowing rugeley to take advantage of the disarray and score two more try’s one by Matt Raynolds and quickly follow by Rugeley Old Boy and Super Sub Carl Johnson leaving St Leonards RED FACED and bringing the score to 29 – 0 to the home team.
St Leonards were able to come back with a consolation penalty ending the game 29 – 3 to Rugeley.
