Rugeley youngsters give Burton a run for their money

Rugeley’s under 15’s travelled to burton on Sunday with depleted numbers but this was not to deter the youngsters, as they play with grit and determination.
Burton rugby club kindly loan the visitors players to make up the numbers and even with the loan players the visitors kept the home team under pressure throughout the first period of play.
20min’s in to the game Burton was able to break away from Rugeley and score a try but failed to convert bringing the score to 5 – 0 to Burton.
Rugeley once again came back at burton and with great forward play from the youngsters were starting to cause burton some irritation and with uncontested scrums the vising team seemed as if they were taking full control of the mornings proceedings.
At the despair of the Rugeley youngsters Burton once again came out of what seemed to be a phoenix out of the fire and score their second try of the game and with the conversion was able to end the first period with what seemed a comfortable lead. 12 – 0.
Rugeley started the second period with the drive and determination as in the first the youngsters played as very well honed team and it showed the forward play was outstanding and the defence seemed to be impregnable.
Rugeley as a team applied immense pressure on Burton and for a large portion of the period was well and truly planted in the home 22.
Then once again burton came from nowhere and scored what seemed to be an opportunist try and with the conversion bringing their score to 17-0 to the home team.
With Rugeley’s youngsters starting to feel a little deflated it seemed as if the visitors were travelling back north west with a white wash, But as Rugeley always do the towns youngsters snapped back into mighty playing mood and once again the home team was not sure what had happened to them and the young visitors came right back at them with young Carling Petitte putting the ball over the try line but for the ref to disallow due to an earlier knock on.
But this did not stop the Rugeley youngsters and with the restart and only 5 minutes to go Rugeley were able to put together superb set play this allowing Leon Brighton to score the well-deserved try Rugeley needed.
The final score was 17 – 5 to Burton and when asked the Burton coaching team replied “our boys have not lost a game in the last 4 weeks and each result has been over50, so for Rugeley to hold the home team to 17 is an outstanding achievement for the Rugeley youngsters.
With attitude and sheer determination like that those boys are going to be a force to be reckoned with”.
